Go Green and Save Green: Tax Credits for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Everybody loves a tax break. This has always been true… Rich or poor, who doesn’t savor the feeling of getting a rebate or a credit on their taxes?   At the very least, it should free up enough money to perhaps plan that next palace coup.

Did you know that after Julius Caesar was murdered in 44 B.C. by his own men (“Et tu, Brute?”), his adopted son, Octavian, seized control of Rome (eventually taking the name Augustus Caesar) and brought an end to the strife in the Roman Empire IN PART because he championed a system of favorable tax breaks for merchants and businessmen?

It’s true.

Augustus Caesar

Marc Antony had led the political coup against Julius Caesar, and expected to assume control of the Empire, but Antony favored a system of economic control through heavy taxation of trade routes and farming. The Roman people refused this, appointing Augustus to the Roman principate instead; and voila! The first tax break was born.

Even two thousand years ago, people loved saving a few shekels.

The seeds of that simple idea live on today, in the form of IRS Tax Form 8911, which has the inelegant title of: ‘Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit’.

Simply put, this government form allows the applicant to claim a credit of 30% of the equipment’s cost (or $30,000 – whichever is smaller) on their tax return for the year.  This means that any company wishing to install charging stations for Electric Vehicles will be able to do so at a more reasonable cost – or perhaps install a few extra with the savings!
