Martin Eberhard

Martin Eberhard brings more than 20 years of experience in electrical engineering to Coulomb. In 1983 he joined Wyse Technology, then went on to found Network Computing Devices, where he served as chief engineer. After NCD's successful IPO, Mr. Eberhard entered the publishing industry and co-founded NuvoMedia. There he invented the Rocket eBook, a handheld electronic book and secure web-based distribution systems. He then sold NuvoMedia to Gemstar/TV guide in 2000, where he became senior vice President. After leaving TV Guide, Eberhard was vice president of engineering at PacketDesign.

Eberhard's career took a sharp turn when he teamed with Marc Tarpenning to improve electric cars and create a high-performance electric vehicle (EV) without worrying about its price tag. The Tesla Roadster was created, which achieved the longest driving range of any production electric car by a factor of two. Eberhard grew Tesla Motors from two people to a team of 280 people in 4 countries, with expertise across the disciplines needed to create a car company. Along the way, he raised over $100M from both venture capitalists and angel investors. He led the development of the Roadster from inception through design and testing including the stringent safety testing required by the US Department of Transportation, and also including performance and range tests that validate his original claims of 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, and nearly 250 miles range per charge.

Eberhard's impact on the electric car industry is unmatched. Recently Bob Lutz, Vice-Chairman of General Motors, publicly commented that he restarted GM's electric car program, creating the upcoming Chevy Volt as a direct response to the Tesla Roadster.

Eberhard received his Master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
